Manipur govt warns against fuel hoarding, confirms no LPG shortage
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Manipur government on Tuesday clarified that there is no shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), petrol, or diesel in the state, while issuing a stern warning against black marketing, hoarding, and other malpractices involving petroleum products in Imphal. The announcement came amid the circulation of misinformation that had reportedly been causing unnecessary panic among consumers.
No Shortage, Supply Running Smoothly
Yumnam Nelson, Director of the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Department, confirmed that the State Level Coordinator of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Imphal, has verified that adequate stocks of LPG, petrol, and diesel are available across Manipur. He stated that distribution is continuing without any disruption and that supply is being maintained smoothly throughout the state.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited also reaffirmed that sufficient stocks of LPG and other petroleum products are in place, putting to rest concerns that had been fuelled by what officials described as deceptive and baseless claims circulating publicly.
Misinformation Behind Public Panic
According to Nelson, the department had noticed the spread of misinformation alleging a shortage of LPG and other petroleum products in Manipur. He said such claims were misleading consumers and creating unnecessary panic among the general public. Officials have not specified the origin of the misinformation, but the swift public clarification suggests the rumours had gained notable traction.
This comes amid a broader pattern seen across several Indian states where unverified social media claims about fuel or commodity shortages have triggered localised panic buying, straining supply chains even when stocks are adequate.
Strict Action Warned Against Offenders
Nelson urged consumers not to panic or engage in unnecessary hoarding of LPG cylinders and petroleum products, warning that such practices could lead to accidents and serious safety hazards. He also cautioned that the purchase of petrol and diesel in containers or jerrycans is strictly prohibited.
Oil pumps and retail outlets found violating government directives will face legal proceedings, officials stated. Offenders will be penalised under the Prevention of Black Marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980, the Petroleum Act, 1934, and other relevant laws.
What Consumers and Retailers Should Know
The government's advisory is directed at both consumers and sellers. Consumers are being asked to refrain from stockpiling LPG cylinders, while retailers and fuel pump operators are on notice that any malpractice in the sale and distribution of petroleum products will attract strict legal action. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether any specific individuals or outlets are under investigation.
With adequate stocks confirmed and enforcement mechanisms invoked, officials are expected to monitor the situation closely in the coming days to ensure supply stability is maintained across the state.
