Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday, 25 August reaffirmed India's commitment to building a conducive environment for global investors and forging enduring partnerships for shared growth, during the second day of his official visit to Japan. The minister's engagements in Tokyo spanned institutional investors, Japanese government officials, and a high-profile media interaction, underscoring the strategic depth of the India-Japan economic relationship.
Breakfast Roundtable with Global Institutional Investors
Goyal opened his day with a breakfast roundtable alongside representatives of leading Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), where he outlined India's evolving investment landscape, progress on ease of doing business, and emerging sectoral opportunities. He also held a focused meeting with Ryo Ohira, Managing Director and Head of East Asia at investment management firm Neuberger Berman, and his delegation.
'We discussed opportunities to deepen investment linkages between India and Japan, and ways to strengthen financial and wealth management partnerships. India's growing economy continues to offer expanding opportunities for global financial institutions,' Goyal posted on X.
India House Engagement and Diplomatic Outreach
On the previous evening, the minister joined Ambassador Nagma Mallick at India House for a gathering with 'friends of India'. He acknowledged the participation of senior Japanese officials, including Minister Minoru Kiuchi, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki, State Minister Toshiro Ino, JBIC Chairman Tadashi Maeda, and JETRO Chairman and CEO Norihiko Ishiguro.
'We agreed to take forward the understandings reached by our Prime Ministers at the Annual Summit in July and work together to make the India-Japan partnership Next Generation-ready,' Goyal said in his post.
Nikkei Asia Fireside Chat on Next-Generation Economic Partnership
In a fireside chat with Nikkei Asia focused on the India-Japan Next Generation Economic Partnership, Goyal highlighted India's position as the fastest-growing major economy and outlined priority areas for bilateral economic cooperation. He pointed to consistent progress in semiconductors, clean energy, digital infrastructure, information technology, and physical infrastructure as key pillars of the partnership.
'Japan, which has been a strong partner in our growth story, now has the opportunity to further solidify its presence, benefit from the massive manufacturing base in India, and build at scale,' he said.
Strategic Significance of the Visit
The minister described the India-Japan partnership as rooted in trust, technology, and shared prosperity, with resilient supply chains and deep co-innovation at its core. This comes amid a broader push by New Delhi to diversify and deepen its economic relationships across East Asia, with Japan — already one of India's top foreign direct investment sources — seen as a critical anchor in that strategy. The visit follows the bilateral Annual Summit held in July, where the two nations' Prime Ministers charted a forward-looking agenda for economic cooperation.
Further outcomes from the Tokyo engagements are expected to be formalised in the weeks ahead as both sides work to operationalise the commitments made at the summit level.
