What Does the Gujarat Budget Hold for Common People?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (NationPress) National convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Arvind Kejriwal, publicly condemned the Gujarat Budget for 2026-27 on Saturday, asserting that it offered “nothing for the common people and was solely crafted for exploitation.”
In a press conference held in Ahmedabad with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Kejriwal remarked, “This budget does not cater to the common populace in Gujarat. It is designed for plunder.”
He pointed out, “The budget fails to address critical areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, small businesses, women's issues, and unemployment.”
Referencing the BJP's lengthy tenure in the state, he stated, “Despite 30 years in power, the infrastructure of roads, schools, and hospitals in Gujarat remains deplorable.”
Kejriwal claimed that farmers who voice their concerns face repercussions, stating, “If a farmer speaks out, they risk imprisonment under false allegations. The BJP's disrespect towards the people of Gujarat will not be accepted.”
The AAP leader also expressed worries regarding trade and agriculture, suggesting, “The India-United States trade agreement could halt our exports. Our farmers’ cotton may not find a market here or in America.”
He questioned the BJP's inability to achieve what AAP has accomplished in other regions, stating, “What we have achieved in Punjab in four years, why couldn’t the BJP do it in Gujarat in 30 years?” He emphasized that “the people are rallying behind Isudan Gadhvi, Gopal Italia, and Chaitar Vasava, and wherever we go in Gujarat, enthusiasm follows.”
Kejriwal further noted, “Gujarat residents perceive Congress as being aligned with the BJP. The people of Gujarat harbor a strong aversion towards Congress.”
Chief Minister Mann highlighted issues surrounding taxation and welfare, questioning, “Where does the tax revenue go? Citizens do not see any benefits. People in Gujarat pay taxes, yet the funds are funneled to the elite.”
He compared this to Delhi, stating, “Kejriwal ji has doubled the budget of Delhi in a decade. Under his leadership, electricity is free in Delhi, and schools and hospitals have seen considerable improvements.”
Discussing Punjab, Mann noted, “In Punjab, 90% of households receive zero electricity bills. We offer free electricity and still maintain a profitable electricity board.”
He added, “In Punjab, farmers receive free daytime electricity. The government covers medical costs up to Rs 10 lakh for each family, allowing even the poorest laborers to receive treatment in private hospitals at no charge.”
Mann also commented, “In SIR, they are creating their own voter base.”
This press conference was part of Kejriwal’s two-day visit to Gujarat, during which he and Mann are set to engage with party supporters and the public to strengthen their outreach in the region.
