Gujarat family of 3 dies in Ohio motel fire, trapped inside room
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Three members of a Gujarat family perished in a devastating fire at the Econo Lodge motel in Wooster, Ohio, in the early hours of Thursday, 3 July 2025, after being trapped inside their living quarters despite frantic calls for help. The victims — Hitesh Suthar, his wife Hina Suthar, and their 20-year-old daughter Ishani Suthar — are believed to have died of suspected suffocation before rescuers could reach them.
Who the victims were
The Suthar family originally hailed from Nadiad in Gujarat's Kheda district and had relocated to the United States approximately two years ago. Hitesh was employed at the Econo Lodge, and the family resided at the motel as part of his accommodation arrangement — a common practice for hospitality workers in small-town America.
How the fire unfolded
The blaze broke out at approximately 1.30 am local time, when the family was inside their room. As smoke and flames spread rapidly through the building, Hitesh called the motel's front desk seeking urgent assistance.
Front-desk employee April Graser, who was on duty at the time, said the overnight shift had begun routinely before fire alarms suddenly sounded. She advised the trapped family to turn on the bathroom water and shelter inside while emergency services were contacted.
'He pleaded with me to get help because they were trapped inside the building and could not get out of their room. I could hear them crying and screaming,' Graser recalled.
The family locked themselves inside the bathroom in a desperate bid to shield themselves from the smoke and flames. However, the fire took considerable time to bring under control, and all three died before firefighters could reach them.
Emergency response and scene details
When fire crews arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames breaching the motel's roof. According to officials, multiple rescue attempts were made but proved unsuccessful.
'We saw multiple units on fire, fire through the roof, made multiple rescue attempts, and unfortunately, those were unsuccessful, and there are confirmed three deceased occupants from the motel,' officials stated.
Images from the scene showed extensive structural damage to a detached rear section of the motel, located roughly 96 kilometres south of Cleveland.
Investigation under way
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. No official determination on whether the fire was accidental or otherwise has been made public.
This comes amid longstanding concerns about fire safety standards at budget motels in the United States, particularly for live-in staff who may have limited egress options. The Wooster tragedy is likely to renew scrutiny of accommodation arrangements for motel employees. The Indian consulate has not yet issued a formal statement, and the families of the deceased in India are reportedly in shock following the news.
