Tragic Fire Claims Five Lives in Surat Residential Building
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In Surat, on March 31 (NationPress), a tragic incident resulted in the loss of five lives, including four women and a young child, following a fire in a residential building located in the Limbayat area on Tuesday morning, according to officials.
The blaze erupted around 11 a.m. in Mithi Khadi, where a ground-plus-two-storey structure caught fire.
Initial reports suggest that the fire may have originated on the ground floor during cooking, potentially due to a gas leak, and quickly spread throughout the building.
Fire brigade units arrived shortly after receiving the emergency call and began rescue operations.
All five residents were discovered unconscious inside the house and were transported to a government hospital in Surat, where they were pronounced dead.
The victims have been named as Shehnaz Begum Ansari (65), Husa Begum Ansari (18), Shabina Ramzan Ansari (28), Parveen Abdul Kalam Ansari (19), and Subhan Ramzan Ansari (4).
Authorities reported that the family operated a saree business from home, storing numerous sarees, foam sheets, and other materials within the premises.
These items, along with chemicals and oils used in their work, are thought to have contributed to the rapid fire spread.
Thick smoke filled the structure, leaving little opportunity for escape for those inside.
Inspector Chirag Dhokadiya stated, “The fire started around 11 a.m. today. Five family members, including four women, have perished. The family was involved in freelance saree work, and a significant quantity of sarees was present at the scene.”
He added that a forensic science team has been dispatched to investigate the site, and the definitive cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“The bodies have been sent for postmortem, and we await the medical reports,” he noted.
Preliminary findings also suggest the possibility of an electrical short circuit, with sparks igniting highly flammable materials like foam sheets used for saree packaging.
As flames consumed the stored items, toxic smoke generated within the confined space likely caused suffocation.
Firefighters managed to control the blaze after significant effort, with help from nearby fire stations responding to the emergency.
Officials have begun a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of this unfortunate incident.
