Jammu & Kashmir: Heartbreaking Blaze in Kathua Results in Six Fatalities, Including Two Youngsters

New Delhi, Dec 18 (NationPress) A heartbreaking blaze engulfed a residence in the Shiv Nagar area of Kathua city on Wednesday, resulting in the tragic loss of six individuals, including two young children.
As per reports from doctors at GMC Hospital, Kathua, the victims died due to suffocation stemming from smoke inhalation.
The incident took place around 2:21 A.M. Emergency services were quickly alerted, with personnel from the fire department and police hurrying to the site. Despite their prompt actions, six individuals were declared dead upon reaching the hospital.
This tragedy unfolded in a rented accommodation where the victims lived. Surinder Atri, a doctor at GMC Hospital, remarked, “This is an extremely tragic incident. The fire erupted in a rented house. Among the deceased are the spouse of a retired Assistant Matron, their unmarried daughter, and two children from her brother’s family. The survivors, including another daughter, a son, and the remaining family members of the brother, are currently safe.”
Initial reports indicate that the fire may have been sparked by a burning lamp or stove, which ignited furniture and other household items. The flames swiftly consumed the room and spread to nearby areas. The thick smoke instigated panic and caused deaths due to suffocation rather than burns, as no significant burn injuries were observed on the victims.
Dr. Atri further stated, “The victims were asleep in a single room when the fire erupted. This is an enormous loss for the family. Among those who perished were the husband of the retired Assistant Matron, her unmarried daughter, and her brother’s two children. Their absence has created an unfillable void.”
Authorities are currently investigating the precise cause of the fire to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.
