The Gujarat government on Thursday, 30 July announced a financial rehabilitation package for traders hit by heavy rains and flooding in Valsad and Navsari districts, and simultaneously ordered an immediate survey of damage to agricultural and horticultural crops to determine relief for farmers in the affected areas.

What the Relief Package Covers

Government Spokesperson and Minister Jitu Vaghani, addressing the media from Valsad, confirmed that financial assistance would be extended to affected traders — including shopkeepers, street vendors, and small business owners — on the same lines as relief packages announced earlier for flood-hit traders in Ahmedabad and Surat. A detailed announcement for farmers is expected once the damage survey is finalised.

Vaghani said financial assistance to farmers would be determined in accordance with the norms and guidelines of both the Central and State Governments after the assessment is completed. 'The state government is committed to supporting citizens at every stage during this difficult period and ensuring timely assistance to all those affected,' he said.

Chief Minister's Directive

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel had directed authorities to immediately undertake a comprehensive assessment of crop losses in the affected areas, according to Vaghani. The instruction reflects the scale of agricultural disruption in south Gujarat, where Valsad and Navsari have emerged as among the worst-affected districts following widespread flooding.

IMD Alerts and High-Alert Districts

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) continuing to issue Red and Orange alerts for parts of Gujarat over the next two days, Vaghani urged residents to strictly follow advisories and avoid unnecessary movement in vulnerable areas. According to the IMD forecast, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected across several districts between 31 July and 2 August.

A high alert has been declared for Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Bharuch, Anand, Narmada, Tapi, Dang, Chhota Udepur, Panchmahal, Dahod, and Mahisagar districts.

State Emergency Machinery on Alert

A comprehensive review meeting was held under the chairmanship of Dr Jayanti Ravi at the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar to ensure administrative preparedness. Vaghani also commended voluntary organisations, government officials, emergency responders, and citizens for their collective efforts in managing the ongoing flood situation.

This is the second major flood-relief announcement by the Gujarat government in the current monsoon season, following similar packages for traders in Ahmedabad and Surat — underscoring the breadth of this year's flooding across the state.
