Gujarat: Man arrested for sexually assaulting minor, extorting ₹46 lakh in Valsad
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A 21-year-old man has been arrested by Dungri police in Valsad district, Gujarat, for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl and using photographs of the incident to extort ₹2.61 lakh in cash and gold ornaments worth approximately ₹43.48 lakh from her family, police said on Monday, 2 November 2026. The accused, identified as Dhruvil Patel, a resident of Shankartalav Mandir Faliya in Valsad, was apprehended on 29 October, roughly ten days after the victim's family filed a formal complaint on 19 October.
How the Crime Unfolded
According to the complaint, Patel allegedly lured the minor away from her guardians on 31 August and again on 26 September, taking her to Hotel Aamantran on Tithal Road in Valsad on both occasions.
'He sexually assaulted her against her wishes and took photographs of the incident. He subsequently threatened to circulate the photographs and defame her, using them to intimidate her into arranging money and valuables from her home,' officials stated.
Over multiple occasions, the accused allegedly extracted ₹2.61 lakh in cash and gold ornaments weighing approximately 32.4 tolas, valued at ₹43.48 lakh — bringing the total extortion to roughly ₹46 lakh.
The Investigation and Arrest
Following registration of a case under Sections 308(2), 64(2)(m) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, a team led by Dungri Police Inspector U H Patel launched efforts to trace the accused through technical analysis and human intelligence.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Hirenbhai Patel received a tip-off pinpointing the accused's location, following which a team was dispatched and Dhruvil Patel was apprehended and brought to Dungri police station on 29 October.
Recoveries During Remand
During police remand, investigators recovered gold ornaments weighing approximately 15.33 tolas, valued at ₹19.54 lakh, along with ₹5,000 in cash and a mobile phone worth ₹5,000. A SIM card and a diary were also seized. The total value of the recovered property was estimated at ₹19.64 lakh.
Legal Framework and What Follows
The POCSO Act provisions under which the accused has been charged carry stringent penalties, with Section 6 — aggravated penetrative sexual assault — attracting a minimum sentence of 20 years' rigorous imprisonment, extendable to life. This comes amid growing attention to child safety crimes in Gujarat, where POCSO cases have seen a steady rise in reported numbers in recent years.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior officials, and further investigation is underway. Police have not ruled out the possibility of additional recoveries.
