Gandhinagar, Feb 19 (NationPress) The Gujarat government is set to initiate the acquisition of tur (pigeon pea) at the minimum support price (MSP) throughout the state starting February 23, as announced by Agriculture and Spokesperson Minister Jitu Vaghani on Thursday.
More than 1.33 lakh farmers have registered to sell their produce at the MSP.
This announcement follows a meeting of the State Cabinet held during the current Legislative Assembly session, chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Minister Vaghani emphasized that this initiative is aimed at providing farmers with remunerative prices and economic security for their crops.
“The Central government sets MSPs for various crops and purchases produce at these rates to ensure that farmers receive fair and profitable prices for their harvests,” the minister elaborated.
He mentioned that the MSP for tur for the year 2025-26 has been established at Rs 8,000 per quintal (Rs 1,600 per 20 kg) before the sowing season, which has spurred extensive cultivation across the state.
In order to facilitate smooth procurement, approximately 130 purchase centres have been established based on the sowing area and anticipated production.
“Farmers registered for selling tur at MSP will be notified via SMS. Upon receiving the SMS, they should present themselves with the designated quantity at the specified purchase centre to benefit from this scheme,” Minister Vaghani mentioned.
He also assured that the state government has made all necessary arrangements to ensure adequate purchases from all registered farmers.
This announcement follows the state government's budget for 2026-27, presented by Finance Minister Kanu Desai, which allocates Rs 24,022 crore for the Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Department, underscoring a commitment to farmer empowerment and rural development.
The overall state budget is Rs 4.08 lakh crore.
Minister Vaghani welcomed the budget, stating, “Today’s Gujarat budget will further advance Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Developed India @ 2047’. Presented under the slogan ‘Where there is humanity, there are facilities’, it prioritizes agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, roads, and all essential sectors, ensuring comprehensive development for the state.”
He also highlighted the government’s focus on agricultural mechanisation, which aims to reduce labor and costs for farmers.
