Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, March 17 (NationPress) The state of Gujarat is investing Rs 59.14 crore in the 2026-27 fiscal budget to establish ‘pink toilets’ aimed at women throughout urban areas. This initiative is part of an enhanced effort under the 'Nirmal Gujarat 2.0' program, which seeks to bolster sanitation infrastructure and promote public health.
This project will be rolled out in municipalities, municipal corporations, and urban pilgrimage sites, adding to four new elements introduced in the cleanliness initiative for the upcoming financial year.
The objective is to create safe, clean, and modern sanitation facilities for women in areas with high foot traffic.
The Nirmal Gujarat initiative was first initiated in 2007 by the then Chief Minister and current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and has broadened its focus over the years, moving beyond mere cleanliness efforts.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Nirmal Gujarat 2.0 was unveiled in 2024 to promote greater public awareness regarding cleanliness and to position Gujarat as a frontrunner in sanitation.
Officials indicate that each pink toilet unit will consist of four standard toilet seats, one seat for differently-abled women, a changing area, a baby feeding room, and a designated space for a female caretaker.
The design of these facilities aims to meet hygiene, accessibility, and safety standards for women in urban environments.
The allocation for pink toilets is part of a broader budget of Rs 329.54 crore dedicated to the four newly introduced components under Nirmal Gujarat 2.0.
These components focus on enhancing door-to-door solid waste collection in urban local bodies, developing women-centric sanitation facilities, improving the operation and upkeep of public toilets, and initiating river cleaning projects.
According to officials, these initiatives aim to ensure comprehensive door-to-door waste collection in urban regions and to support the effective realization of the 'Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0' goals.
They also mentioned that the management and maintenance of all public toilets in municipal jurisdictions will be reinforced under this program.
This announcement follows the recent celebration of International Women’s Day, demonstrating the state government’s ongoing commitment to women’s hygiene, safety, and access to vital public amenities.
