Escalating Gulf Tensions Lead to Flight Cancellations in Kerala; Venugopal Calls for Government Action
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 28 (NationPress) A wave of flight cancellations has swept through Kerala’s international airports on Friday, highlighting the escalating tensions in West Asia that are severely disrupting travel for thousands of expatriates and their families.
Sources from the airport reported that Cochin International Airport, the busiest in the state, experienced the highest number of cancellations.
Additionally, operations from Kannur International Airport, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, and Calicut International Airport were also impacted, with several flights cancelled or rescheduled due to increased security concerns and airspace restrictions over parts of the Middle East.
As of now, Cochin Airport has cancelled 14 flights and advised passengers heading to the Middle East to confirm their flight status with airlines before departing for the airport.
In a notable incident, a flight that had already taken off for Muscat was forced to return mid-flight, underscoring the unpredictable nature of current operations.
These disruptions are occurring amidst a backdrop of recent coordinated military actions by Israel and the United States in Iran, leading to heightened tensions in the region.
Several Gulf nations have imposed airspace restrictions as a precaution, prompting airlines to cancel flights and modify routes.
This situation is particularly critical for Kerala, where approximately 85% of its diaspora, estimated at nearly 2.5 million people, reside in various Middle Eastern countries.
The Gulf region serves as the cornerstone of the state's remittance-based economy, and prolonged disruptions could result in significant economic and social repercussions.
In response to these developments, K. C. Venugopal, AICC General Secretary and MP from Alappuzha, expressed his deep concern and called upon the Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs to implement all necessary diplomatic and logistical measures to safeguard the well-being of Indian nationals in the region.
He urged for immediate actions to ensure the safe passage and evacuation of citizens who are in vulnerable situations and those wishing to return home.
