Srinagar, May 13 (NationPress) In the midst of the tense situation between India and Pakistan following recent conflicts and a ceasefire announcement, a fierce gunfight erupted on Tuesday between security personnel and militants in the Keller area of Shopian district within Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
According to officials, an encounter was initiated between the militants and a combined team of security forces in the Shukroo Keller area of Shopian in South Kashmir.
Sources indicate that approximately two to three militants are currently believed to be cornered in the region.
High-ranking police officials reported hearing gunfire in the Keller forest.
This incident marks the second terrorist activity in J&K since the ceasefire declaration by the two neighboring nations on May 11.
On the same evening, suspected militants opened fire, injuring a guard stationed at the gate of the Army’s Nagrota Corps headquarters. Following the attack, one soldier was wounded, and the assailants managed to flee.
Earlier, the Indian Army stated on Tuesday, “The night was largely peaceful across Jammu and Kashmir and surrounding areas along the International Border. No incidents were reported, signifying the first tranquil night in recent days.”
Officials confirmed that the situation in the border districts of Jammu division remained stable overnight, with no reports of drone activities, gunfire, or shelling as of Sunday morning.
Despite the calm, the Army and security forces maintained heightened alertness along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) throughout J&K. No incidents of drone incursions or cross-border firing/shelling were recorded in the districts of Uri, Kupwara, Poonch, Rajouri, Jammu, Samba, Kathua, and Bandipora during the night.
Security forces are remaining vigilant across J&K as reports have surfaced regarding the Pakistan Army's breach of the ceasefire on Saturday, even after both nations declared an end to hostilities on land, air, and sea.
Authorities have advised numerous residents in border areas adjacent to the LoC and IB to refrain from returning home until the situation normalizes fully.
