Telangana Government Designates Gurramguda as Reserve Forest
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, March 13 (NationPress) Following an extensive legal struggle, the Telangana government has officially recognized the Gurramguda forest area located in the Amangal division of Rangareddy district as a Reserve Forest, as confirmed by a senior official on Friday.
The state administration has released a Government Order (GO) designating 424 acres and 31 guntas of forest land as Reserve Forest in accordance with Section 15 of the Telangana Forest Act, 1967.
As per a statement from Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Dr. C. Suvarna, the government issued G.O. Ms. No. 7 on March 9, 2026, via the Environment, Forests, Science and Technology Department.
This declaration completes the legal procedures surrounding the land, granting the forest area official Reserve Forest status and ensuring enhanced legal safeguards.
Dr. Suvarna noted that 102 acres in Survey No. 201/1 of Sahebnagar Kalan village had been embroiled in legal disputes for years. This matter, known as the 'Sahebnagar Kalan case', was deliberated in various courts until the Supreme Court affirmed the Forest Department’s claim, highlighting the necessity of safeguarding forestlands from encroachments and unauthorized claims.
In December 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that the 102 acres in Sahebnagar Kalan constitutes a portion of the Gurramguda reserve forest block, rather than private property.
The forest department had faced setbacks in lower courts and the Telangana High Court. Reports indicate that certain individuals, claiming to be the legal successors of Salar Jung III, Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, attempted to illegally occupy the land.
Dr. Suvarna stated that the ruling bolstered the government’s rights regarding the land.
Moreover, the Telangana government has plans to transform the area into a large Urban Forest Park. With the rapid urbanization of Hyderabad increasing the demand for green spaces, this park is anticipated to become a vital green zone for the city's inhabitants.
The park will be developed as a site for people to connect with nature, foster environmental consciousness, and enjoy quality time with their families.
The statement emphasized that under the Chief Minister's leadership, the Telangana government is prioritizing the protection of forest lands and curbing encroachments while simultaneously expanding urban forest parks and green spaces around Hyderabad.
Dr. Suvarna remarked that the designation of the Gurramguda forest area as a Reserve Forest represents a significant advancement in this initiative.
