Gurugram, April 8 (NationPress) A dedicated cybercrime unit of the Gurugram Police has apprehended two individuals for allegedly supplying mobile SIM cards to cybercriminals, who deceived a victim out of Rs 50,000, police reported on Tuesday.

On February 26, a complaint was filed at the Cyber Crime South police station in Gurugram regarding a scam involving Rs 50,000 linked to a supposed suit booking via Instagram.

An official stated that following the complaint, a case was registered under applicable sections at the Cyber Crime South police station in Gurugram.

During the investigation, a police team led by Inspector Naveen Kumar executed a raid and arrested the two suspects on Monday in Bharatpur, Rajasthan.

The suspects were identified as Shailesh Kumar and Manish, both residents of Bharatpur in Rajasthan. The mobile number used in the fraudulent activity was registered under the name of Shailesh Kumar, who subsequently sold it to Manish. Manish then transferred this SIM card to another individual. In exchange, Shailesh received Rs 1,000, while Manish acquired Rs 2,000, said Sandeep Kumar, the spokesperson for the Gurugram Police.

The police team is pursuing further action in the case according to legal protocols, with the suspects set to be placed on police remand for further interrogation.

Recent data from the police indicated that the district had received 9,891 cybercrime complaints during the initial three months of 2024. In contrast, 9,675 complaints were recorded for the same period in 2025.

In 2024, a total of 298 cases were documented during this time frame, compared to 420 in 2025.

During the first quarter of 2024, cybercriminals defrauded the public of Rs 118.87 crore, while in 2025, the total fraudulent amount reached Rs 65.34 crore.

In light of the escalating cybercrime rates over recent years, Vikas Arora, Commissioner of Police, stated that directives have been issued to the cyber police teams to systematically apprehend cybercriminals and enhance public awareness through various outreach programs.
