Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Madhya Pradesh Minister Narottam Mishra on Friday, 7 August described the Datia Assembly bypoll defeat as a “personal loss” and said he would rather continue serving the party through assigned responsibilities than hold a formal post.

BJP candidate Ashutosh Tiwari lost the Datia Assembly bypoll to Congress’ Ghanshyam Singh by a margin of 6,016 votes. Mishra, who was closely associated with the constituency, said the outcome was “saddening” on a personal level. “Apart from the party’s defeat, it is a personal loss for me,” he said.

Despite the result, Mishra defended the candidate selection, calling Tiwari a “dedicated party worker” who “has devoted most of his life to the party and the country.” He maintained there was “no mistake” in fielding Tiwari.

On Student and Farmer Protests as Possible Factors

Asked whether the Gen-Z student movement or farmers’ protests may have contributed to the BJP’s defeat, Mishra was measured in his response. “Whether it was the Gen-Z movement or the farmers’ protest, we don’t think (it impacted the bypoll). However, it is a subject that requires research. We will look into it in depth and find out about both aspects,” he said.

His remarks suggest the party has not yet drawn firm conclusions on the ground-level factors behind the loss, and an internal review is likely.

What Mishra Wants from the Party

On his own future within the organisation, Mishra was candid. “I would prefer not to be given any post, but to be given work for the party, just as the party has been assigning me work so far,” he said.

He pointed to his track record of party assignments after losing his own legislative seat — including roles in Maharashtra, Delhi, and Bihar elections — as evidence of his continued utility to the BJP. “The party has given me a lot. It kept me as an MLA for 30 years and as a minister for 15 years,” Mishra added, expressing gratitude to the party leadership.

The Datia bypoll result is a setback in a state where the BJP holds government, making the loss more politically pointed. Bypolls in ruling-party strongholds are closely watched as mood indicators, and a 6,016-vote margin in favour of the Congress will add pressure on the state unit to assess its outreach among farmers and younger voters. Mishra’s public posture — accepting personal accountability while backing the candidate selection — signals a deliberate effort to manage internal optics ahead of any organisational reshuffle.
