Guwahati, Dec 19 (NationPress) Anticipation is soaring in Assam as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to visit Guwahati for the inauguration of the newly built Integrated Terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport this Saturday.
Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his excitement on social media, stating that the airport is ready to welcome the Prime Minister. “The excitement is at its peak! The Integrated Terminal at LGBI Airport is beautifully adorned to receive Adarniya Narendra Modi ji tomorrow. Just a few hours remain!” CM Sarma shared on X.
The newly unveiled Integrated Terminal is recognized as a significant infrastructure achievement for the Northeast, greatly improving passenger handling capabilities and modern facilities at the region's busiest airport.
With a design that harmoniously blends modern architecture and Assam's cultural essence, the terminal is poised to enhance the travel experience for both domestic and international travelers.
Officials noted that the terminal's inauguration is a vital advancement for air connectivity in the Northeast, establishing Guwahati as a central aviation hub that links the region to the rest of India and Southeast Asia.
This project is anticipated to serve as a driving force for economic growth, boost tourism, and enhance cargo transport, particularly for Assam's tea, agricultural products, and handloom items.
Simultaneously, as PM Modi prepares to inaugurate the new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi (LGB) International Airport, the Assam government has begun laying the groundwork for the next phase of expansion at the state’s key aviation center.
CM Sarma mentioned that the government is actively contemplating the construction of a second terminal at Guwahati airport, in light of the consistent rise in passenger traffic and the airport’s growing role as the Northeast’s main gateway.
Once the new terminal is operational, all domestic flight services will transition there.
“Plans for an additional terminal are already in progress. For now, the new terminal will manage operations, while the existing terminal will gradually be phased out,” he explained.
The Chief Minister added that international flights will continue to operate from the current terminal temporarily due to customs and other infrastructure needs, but this arrangement will eventually evolve as facilities are streamlined. “In due course, the old terminal will be closed,” he stated.
