Bhopal, March 16 (NationPress) A significant fire erupted in the intensive care unit of the maternity ward at Kamala Raja Hospital located in the Gwalior district of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday.
No fatalities have been reported as of now.
The blaze was ignited by an explosion in the air conditioner's compressor, resulting in thick, suffocating smoke engulfing the ward.
Expectant mothers resting in the ICU were jolted awake to find faint flames flickering in the smoke.
Panic erupted, prompting staff to try to ventilate the ward by shattering windows.
Officials from the hospital, including the Collector and the Superintendent of Police, were swiftly notified and arrived along with fire response teams.
After extensive efforts, all patients were successfully evacuated to safety. The fire was reportedly contained.
The incident transpired between 1:00 a.m. and 1:30 a.m., with 16 women in the labour ward ICU and over 100 patients in adjacent wards, according to staff and police sources.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a short circuit near the ICU's air conditioning unit likely caused the fire.
A police officer stated, 'A thorough investigation has been launched.'
The fire rapidly filled the vicinity with smoke, resulting in a dire situation. Hospital personnel, patients, and their relatives attempted to extinguish the flames while awaiting assistance. Upon receiving the alarm, fire brigade units responded swiftly.
'It took substantial effort to break the windows to clear the smoke, and every female patient and newborn was saved,' the officer noted.
According to hospital sources, on March 9, 2024, a fire at the hospital's trauma center, also caused by an AC compressor explosion, sadly resulted in a patient's death.
