Harsh Malhotra named Delhi BJP chief: Leaders back his organisational experience
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Harsh Malhotra was appointed as the new Delhi BJP President on 28 May, succeeding Virendra Sachdeva. Senior party leaders in the national capital rallied behind the decision, citing Malhotra's dual grounding in organisational and administrative affairs as the key asset he brings to the role.
What Party Leaders Said
Former Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva was among the first to welcome the transition. 'Every responsibility in the party is important. The responsibility that Harsh Malhotra has been given...he has a lot of experience, both administrative and organisational,' he said. 'Undoubtedly, the party will benefit from his experience, and together we will work to take it to even greater heights,' Sachdeva added.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta framed the appointment within the BJP's broader organisational ethos. 'Harsh Malhotra has been entrusted with this new responsibility to take the Delhi organisation forward, to empower every Bharatiya Janata Party worker, and to strengthen the organisation. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to him for this,' she told reporters. Gupta also praised Sachdeva for his 'hard work for the welfare of the Union Territory'.
Sachdeva's Tenure and the Delhi Assembly Win
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari described Sachdeva's tenure as 'very successful', pointing specifically to the party's victory in the Delhi Assembly elections — its first in 27 years. 'After 27 years, we had got a victorious president in Virendra Sachdeva. Now, under the leadership of Harsh Malhotra, we will further take the Bharatiya Janata Party, Delhi Pradesh, forward,' Tiwari said.
Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi echoed that assessment. 'Under his (Sachdeva's) leadership, the party won major elections in the capital and the BJP government was formed in Delhi. Undoubtedly, the party will utilise him in a positive way in the future too,' Wahi said.
A Dig at the Opposition
Delhi Minister Ashish Sood used the occasion to draw a contrast with rival parties. 'In the Bharatiya Janata Party, leadership changes take place democratically after every short period of time. This is not new for us; it may be new for those where only members of one family become the president,' he said — an apparent reference to dynastic succession in opposition outfits.
Ground-Level Impact and the 'Viksit Delhi' Vision
Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said Malhotra's appointment would help the Chief Minister Rekha Gupta-led government implement welfare schemes more effectively at the grassroots level. 'The Bharatiya Janata Party will be further strengthened in Delhi,' Sirsa added, noting that Malhotra's experience would benefit leaders and workers alike.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal tied the appointment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Viksit Delhi' vision, saying all leaders would work under Malhotra's stewardship to turn that blueprint into reality. With a fresh organisational chief now in place, the Delhi BJP's next test will be consolidating its Assembly majority and deepening its presence at the ward level ahead of future electoral cycles.
