Chennai, Sep 20 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted intense rainfall in several regions of Tamil Nadu today, with a special alert issued for six districts.
As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure system developing over southern India is expected to lead to widespread rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
According to the IMD, light to moderate rain, along with thunder and lightning, is anticipated in numerous areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Wind speeds could reach up to 30 to 40 km/h during the evening and night hours.
Heavy rain is forecast for districts such as Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvannamalai.
The weather agency also suggested that similar rainfall conditions might persist into Sunday and Monday, particularly across northern and southern Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.
These areas are expected to experience scattered rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. In Chennai and its neighboring regions, the sky will likely remain generally cloudy throughout the day.
The city might see light to moderate rain showers in isolated locations, with thunderstorms occurring in the evening.
The predicted maximum temperature is around 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to range between 25–26 degrees Celsius.
The IMD has issued a warning to fishermen regarding rough sea conditions in various coastal zones.
Squally weather is anticipated along the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, adjacent to Kumari Sea, parts of the south and central Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and sections of the southwest and central Arabian Sea.
Fishermen are strongly advised against venturing into these waters today.
Authorities have urged residents in at-risk districts to exercise caution, especially in low-lying areas susceptible to waterlogging.
Disaster management teams are on standby to address emergencies related to flooding or wind damage.
As the northeast monsoon has yet to commence, officials noted that the current rainfall activity is indicative of early seasonal weather disturbances typical for this period.
