Ranchi, April 15 (NationPress) The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has entered a new era with Hemant Soren officially taking over as the party's President following a unanimous election.
The announcement was made during the 13th party convention at the Harivansh Tana Bhagat Stadium in Khelgaon, Ranchi, attended by about 4,000 delegates.
This transition marks the conclusion of an era as Shibu Soren, affectionately called Guruji and Hemant Soren's father, stepped down after 38 years at the helm. He has now been honored as the party’s founding patron.
Hemant Soren’s spouse and Gandey MLA, Kalpana Soren, has been appointed as an active member of the party’s Central Committee, which now consists of 289 members.
Having been appointed as JMM's Working President in 2015, Hemant Soren is now assuming complete leadership as the party has officially eliminated the Working President role by modifying its constitution.
In a poignant moment, Shibu Soren himself nominated Hemant Soren for the prestigious position, which was unanimously accepted by voice vote.
Due to age-related issues, Shibu Soren has distanced himself from active politics in recent years. On the first day of the convention, Hemant Soren personally brought his father to the venue in a wheelchair.
Although the formal transition took place on Tuesday, Hemant Soren has been effectively leading the party for nearly a decade.
Under his guidance, the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance), which includes JMM, the Congress, the RJD, and the CPI-ML, triumphed in the 2019 and 2024 Assembly elections, gaining power in Jharkhand.
Established in 1972, the JMM held its inaugural convention in Dhanbad in 1983. Shibu Soren was first elected party President in 1987 and was subsequently re-elected unopposed, most recently for the tenth time during the 12th convention in December 2021.
After his election, Hemant Soren pledged to advance the JMM legacy, stating, "Guruji founded the party as a movement. Now, it is my duty to elevate it to the national level."
