Srinagar, Feb 26 (NationPress) Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K) Srinagar apprehended a group of highway thieves masquerading as police commandos on Wednesday.
A police statement indicated that the Srinagar police have detained a band of thieves who impersonated police commandos to rob trucks along the highway during nighttime.
“The operation resulted in the seizure of imitation firearms, a vehicle, dark uniforms, and other evidence linked to the crimes.
“On February 22, 2025, Police Station Shalteng received a report from Chanchal Singh, son of Sher Singh, a resident of Haryana, who stated that during the night, unknown individuals halted his vehicle at Maloora, Shalteng, and robbed him of cash and valuables at gunpoint. “In response to this complaint, an FIR (No. 15 U/S 307, 126(2), 3(5)) was filed, and an investigation commenced.
“In a prompt response, Srinagar Police assembled multiple teams and executed an extensive search operation. Within days, four suspects were identified and apprehended from different parts of the city.
“They have been identified as Sahil Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mehraj-u-Din Sheikh, from Narakh Budgam, Aqib Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mehraj-u-Din Sheikh, from Narkarah Budgam, Arbaz Ahmad Wani, son of Hilal Ahmad Wani, from SD Colony Batmaloo, and Faisal Ahmad Shah, son of Azad Ahmad Shah, from Nowhatta.
The investigation uncovered two imitation firearms, nine mobile devices, a Swift vehicle, ATM cards, cash, and black commando uniforms utilized in the robberies.
“The suspects specifically targeted trucks bearing registration numbers from outside the Union Territory, selecting isolated highway sections at night to carry out their crimes.
“They threatened drivers with imitation firearms while dressed in dark commando attire before stealing cash, ATM cards, and other valuables.
“Notably, the apprehended individuals are recognized offenders with numerous cases registered against them in various police stations throughout Jammu & Kashmir.
“The Srinagar Police reaffirms its dedication to fighting crime and ensuring public safety. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or criminal occurrences to the nearest police station to aid in protecting the community,” the statement concluded.
