Srinagar, April 3 (NationPress) Two individuals posing as police officials have been apprehended in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, according to officials on Thursday.
The police reported, “Two suspects were arrested following a complaint lodged by Mohd Altaf Ganai, son of Mohd Ramzan Ganai, a resident of Nageenpora Tral, alleging that they were fraudulently impersonating law enforcement officers to extort money from the public.”
The suspects have been identified as Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mohd Jamal Sheikh, residing in Saimooh, and Mohd Shafi Dar, son of Gh Nabi Dar, living in Dadsara.
These individuals targeted unsuspecting citizens, falsely asserting their police authority and soliciting money under various pretenses.
“Their actions came to light after several complaints were filed by victims who felt pressured into paying amounts due to fear of legal repercussions. Based on this complaint, the Tral Police Station registered FIR No. 31 of 2025 under relevant legal sections and took the accused into custody. The suspects now face multiple charges,” the statement detailed.
“Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and report any demands for money made in their name,” the statement further indicated.
Previously, there have been cases of imposters posing as high-ranking police and bureaucratic officials in the region.
Kiran Patel, a fraudster from Gujarat posing as a senior official in the PMO, was arrested in March 2023 at a luxury hotel in Srinagar.
He defrauded people while claiming to be a joint secretary in the PMO and managed to deceive several senior officials.
Patel even had a verified Twitter account with over a thousand followers, impersonating as an additional director for strategy and campaigns in the PMO.
He traveled to various tourist spots in Kashmir, including Gulmarg, alleging that the government tasked him to assess improvements for hotel facilities.
He was granted a Z-plus security detail, a bulletproof SUV, and official lodging at a five-star hotel in Jammu and Kashmir, misleading the administration until his arrest.
