Shimla, May 9 (NationPress) In light of the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla convened a thorough review on Friday regarding the state's readiness to uphold peace, law and order, and ensure public safety.
A high-level assembly took place at Raj Bhavan to evaluate the current security landscape, involving Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, Director General of Police Atul Verma, and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Onkar Sharma. This was aimed at assessing internal security and administrative preparedness, as stated in an official release.
The Governor urged all relevant agencies to be on high alert and fully equipped. He praised the initiative of ‘Operation Sindoor’, describing it as historic, and applauded the Indian Armed Forces for their actions against Pakistan-backed terrorist groups. He warned that Pakistan, in its despair, might engage in rash actions, thus necessitating full readiness from the state.
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary informed the Governor that individuals from Pakistan on short-term visas have already been expelled. He affirmed that security measures for Kashmiri residents in the state have been reinforced, and the welfare of Himachali students and citizens residing in Jammu and Kashmir is under constant supervision.
The Chief Secretary also updated the Governor about the Chief Minister’s review of emergency preparedness with all Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police. They have been directed to carry out regular monitoring, conduct mock drills, and evaluate disaster management strategies, including the establishment of ‘safe houses’.
A successful state-wide mock drill was executed, raising awareness among the public and agencies. Critical intelligence has been disseminated to appropriate agencies to ensure a coordinated response.
The Governor stressed the need for increased vigilance in border areas, especially in localities like Indora and Nurpur adjacent to Pathankot in Punjab. He insisted on maintaining stringent surveillance against anti-social elements in these regions and recommended issuing public advisories to foster community watchfulness in line with Government of India guidelines.
Later, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu met with Governor Shukla at Raj Bhawan to inform him about steps being undertaken by the state in response to the escalating tensions.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania met with Chief Minister Sukhu to discuss the worries expressed by parents of Himachal students studying in Jammu and Kashmir, primarily in Srinagar.
He mentioned that 103 students are currently enrolled in educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir, and their families are seeking their safe return home. The Chief Minister reassured that the state government is committed to ensuring their safety and well-being. He tasked the Chief Secretary with prompt and coordinated actions to guarantee the students' safe return.
