Shimla, June 29 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Sukhu, announced on Sunday that the government is gearing up to initiate a comprehensive anti-drug campaign across the state.
He mentioned that mapping is underway at the panchayat ward level to enable targeted interventions. Furthermore, a Special Task Force is being established to tackle drug trafficking.
To bolster enforcement efforts, 500 new positions will be created within the Police Department.
The Chief Minister emphasized, “The youth represent the future of our nation, and it is our shared duty to shield them from the dangers of drugs,” reiterating the government's strict stance of zero tolerance towards drug abuse.
This announcement was made during the ceremony for the 12th HP Police Half Marathon held in Shimla, where he recognized the winners from various categories, including men, women, and senior citizens over 75.
Expressing grave concern over the involvement of government officials in drug-related activities, he disclosed that 80 government employees have faced strict action.
He also noted that some police personnel have been implicated in drug trafficking, stating that the government is contemplating amendments to the police manual to enhance accountability.
The CM outlined a dual approach for the state, combining strict enforcement with a compassionate stance towards victims.
Under the newly enforced PIT-NDPS Act, which was neglected during the previous BJP administration, 40 detention orders have been authorized, with 36 issued this year alone.
The administration has also taken steps to demolish properties belonging to seven drug peddlers while pursuing further actions against others. Additionally, the state has enacted the HP Anti-Drugs Act, which differentiates between offenders and victims.
He urged parents to engage in open conversations with their children about the dangers of drug abuse.
