New Delhi, March 9 (NationPress) A comprehensive nationwide investigation by the Income Tax Department has uncovered significant sales suppression amounting to approximately Rs 408 crore across 62 restaurants situated in 46 cities across 22 states, as reported by the Finance Ministry on Monday.

The I-T Department initiated this inquiry into tax evasion patterns within the Food and Beverage sector in November 2025.

During the investigation, numerous restaurants were found to be manipulating sales records by deleting bulk bills and altering data to conceal actual sales figures.

“We conducted advanced analytics on transactional data from around 1.77 lakh restaurants in the Food and Beverage sector, utilizing AI-driven analytical tools. This data was juxtaposed with the turnover reported in their Income Tax Returns,” the ministry stated in a release.

The findings indicated widespread under-reporting of income by these establishments, according to the Department.

In various instances, sales figures were not entirely represented in financial accounts or tax submissions, with certain transactions omitted from reported sales.

“As a result, a nationwide survey was executed on March 8, 2026, focusing on 62 restaurants across 46 cities in 22 states. Preliminary analyses indicated suppression of sales nearing Rs 408 crore. Investigations are currently ongoing,” the ministry noted.

The Department reiterated its commitment to fostering voluntary compliance and maintaining a trust-based relationship with taxpayers.

To assist taxpayers in rectifying their discrepancies, it has launched the SAKSHAM NUDGE campaign, aimed at guiding them through the process. Taxpayers are encouraged to file updated returns under Section 139(8A) of the Income Tax Act. In the initial phase, communications will be sent to 63,000 identified restaurants, urging them to amend their returns before the deadline of March 31, 2026.

A detailed understanding of tax evasion will be available once the investigations conclude.

Point of View
