Punjab Minister Reveals Rs 200 Crore Hospitality Tax Evasion Scheme
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, March 30 (NationPress) Punjab's Excise and Taxation Minister, Harpal Singh Cheema, announced on Monday the unearthing of an extensive turnover evasion scheme worth Rs 200 crore within the hospitality sector.
Currently, 882 businesses are being investigated, with Rs 2.02 crore already recovered. Cheema indicated that as more information comes to light, the total evasion could escalate to around Rs 500 crore.
He pointed out that significant urban areas such as Mohali, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana have become central to this malpractice, particularly in sectors heavily reliant on cash and hybrid payment systems.
During a media briefing, Cheema explained that through a thorough, data-centric enforcement initiative targeting hotels, dhabas, eateries, bakeries, sweet shops, restaurants, catering services, and similar venues, a total of 882 businesses associated with the fiscal years 2025-26 have been identified.
“As we continue our analysis and incorporate data from the financial years 2023-24 and 2024-25, the total estimated evasion could approach Rs 500 crore,” he stated.
Outlining the initial findings, Cheema noted, “So far, 239 cases have been reviewed, revealing turnover suppression of roughly Rs 50 crore.”
This tax evasion equates to a tax liability of Rs 2.54 crore at a five percent rate, with the department having secured Rs 2.02 crore in recoveries, and efforts to recover further amounts are ongoing.
Cheema emphasized the significant discrepancies among taxpayers, revealing that turnover suppression exceeding Rs 2 crore was found in three taxpayers, over Rs 1 crore in six, more than Rs 50 lakh in 18, above Rs 25 lakh in 26, and exceeding Rs 5 lakh in 91.
Highlighting trends specific to this sector, further examination revealed consistent patterns of under-reporting, particularly in high-cash and hybrid-payment segments. Notably, dhabas accounted for around Rs 10 crore of the total suppression, small eateries, coffee, and chai bars contributed approximately Rs 8 crore, while pizza and fast-food outlets exceeded Rs 6 crore.
