The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the coming days, with a fresh low-pressure area expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal by 3 July. The developing weather system is likely to intensify monsoon activity across eastern India while triggering intermittent showers over northern Tamil Nadu.

According to the IMD's latest bulletin, an upper-air cyclonic circulation is currently persisting over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to consolidate over the northwest Bay of Bengal around 3 July. Meteorologists are closely monitoring the system's intensity and movement, as both factors will determine the distribution and extent of rainfall across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states.

Forecast for North and South Tamil Nadu

The IMD has forecast moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds at one or two places over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday and Thursday. Weather authorities have advised residents to remain alert for lightning and brief spells of strong winds during thunderstorm activity.

In contrast, south Tamil Nadu is expected to receive light to moderate rainfall at isolated locations during the same period. While widespread heavy rain is not anticipated in the southern districts, localised showers are likely to continue under favourable atmospheric conditions.

Heavy Rain Alert for Hill Districts

The IMD has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Thursday covering the hill regions of Coimbatore district and the districts of The Nilgiris and Theni. These areas are historically prone to intense rainfall during the southwest monsoon and could experience heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Authorities are expected to closely monitor the situation in these vulnerable hilly zones, where heavy rain can trigger localised disruptions.

Chennai Outlook

For Chennai, the IMD has forecast a partly cloudy sky on Wednesday, with light rain and thunderstorms likely in a few parts of the city during the evening or night. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain close to normal, though cloud cover and intermittent showers may offer temporary relief from the prevailing humidity.
