The President, along with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, paid homage by laying wreaths at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal, celebrating the valor of the Manipuri women whose bravery continues to serve as an inspiration for future generations.
In his address, the Governor remarked that this day, often referred to as Nupilan Numit, is dedicated to recognizing the extraordinary bravery, resilience, and patriotic sacrifices made by the women of Manipur.
He emphasized that the Nupi Lal movements of 1904 and 1939 are shining examples of history, where Manipuri women united with unparalleled strength against injustice and exploitation.
“Nupi Lal was not just a protest; it was a powerful demonstration of women’s collective leadership and social awareness. The courageous mothers of Manipur turned their suffering into strength, leading to a movement that continues to inspire. Their sacrifices remind us that societal progress is rooted in respecting and empowering women,” stated Governor Bhalla.
Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel spoke at the event, declaring that Nupi Lal Day serves to honor the incredible courage, unity, and resilience of Manipuri women.
He asserted that Nupi Lal is not merely a historical event but an enduring symbol of the strength of the populace, women's leadership, and collective resistance, which remains vital for Manipur’s development.
Goel recalled that the Nupi Lal, also dubbed the “Women’s War,” commemorates two significant episodes of resistance led by Manipuri women.
The first Nupi Lal in 1904 arose against the reinstatement of forced labor by the British colonial powers and other injustices, while the second Nupi Lal in 1939 was a widespread movement opposing wartime hoarding and the export of rice.
He praised the brave Manipuri women who fought against injustices and policies that threatened the dignity and welfare of the people, emphasizing that their unwavering courage continues to motivate future generations.
The Chief Secretary underscored the enduring tenacity of the 'Ima Markets', recognized as Asia's largest all-women-led markets, exemplifying the strength and leadership of Manipuri women.
He noted that they continue to inspire change across various sectors, maintaining the legacy of Nupi Lal.
Additionally, he acknowledged Padma Shri Awardee 2025, Thiyam Suryamukhi Devi, for her lifelong commitment to classical Manipuri dance.
Goel also mentioned numerous national and state initiatives supporting women's safety, dignity, education, and economic independence, including Mission Shakti, Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, Stand-Up India Scheme, Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Lakhpati Didi Initiative, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan, and the Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme, among others.
He further stressed the government’s initiatives such as Child Care Leave (CCL) and Special Maternity Leave (SML), the Women for Trees project under AMRUT 2.0, the Working Women’s Hostel established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13 across nine locations in Manipur, and the establishment of Ima markets in different districts, all aimed at advancing women’s empowerment in Manipur.
Goel urged the community to honor the brave women who stood against injustices, pledging that their sacrifices will not be forgotten, and to carry forward their spirit with compassion, inclusivity, and progress for a prosperous Manipur.
