New Delhi, July 11 (NationPress) The Income Tax Department has unveiled new excel utilities for ITR-2 and ITR-3 forms, specifically designed for taxpayers with taxable capital gains, cryptocurrency income, and more to facilitate their return filings.
Previously, the department had only made available ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms (in both online and excel formats), which limited the filing options for specific income groups.
On X, the Income Tax Department announced, “Attention Taxpayers! Excel Utilities of ITR-2 and ITR-3 for AY 2025-26 are now live and available for filing.”
To download, navigate to the income tax department’s e-filing ITR portal and access the download section for ITR-2 and ITR-3 utilities. After downloading, a zip file will be available from which the excel file can be extracted,” it specified.
As per the income tax department's website, starting July 11, ITR-2 can be filed by individuals or HUFs not eligible for ITR-1 (Sahaj).
Additionally, those without income from business profits, whether in the form of salary, bonus, commission, or remuneration from a partnership firm, may also file ITR-2, according to the department.
Individuals who must include income from another person, such as a spouse or minor child, will find ITR-2 applicable if the income to be included falls within the aforementioned categories.
The Income Tax Department had previously announced an extension of the due date for filing income tax returns for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) from July 31, 2025, to September 15, 2025.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) decided to extend this deadline “considering the significant changes introduced in the notified ITRs and the time needed for system adjustments and the rollout of ITR utilities for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26.
This extension aims to alleviate concerns raised by stakeholders and provide sufficient time for compliance, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the return filing process, as stated by the IT Department.
