New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) - Sibi George, the Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), engaged in discussions with Swiss State Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alexandre Fasel during the 11th Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi on Friday. The primary focus was on enhancing bilateral cooperation across a range of sectors.
In their meeting, George and Fasel also addressed both regional and global issues.
"Ambassador Sibi George met with Mr. Alexandre Fasel, the Swiss State Secretary of Foreign Affairs, on the sidelines of the 11th Raisina Dialogue today. They discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various sectors and exchanged views on regional and global developments. The implementation of the India EFTA TEPA will promote technological collaboration, attract quality investments, and create job opportunities," stated MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X after the meeting.
According to the MEA, the commercial relationship between India and Switzerland has historical roots dating back to the early 19th century when the Volkart Trading Co. set up its offices in both Basel and Mumbai in 1851. During World War I, Switzerland established its consulates in major global cities, including Mumbai, to secure food and economic interests.
Since the visits of PM Narendra Modi to Switzerland in 2016 and 2018, alongside the visit of Swiss President Doris Leuthard to India in 2017, bilateral relations have significantly strengthened.
Negotiations for a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) commenced in October 2008, and after 21 rounds of talks over 16 years, the agreement was finally signed in March 2024. This agreement marks Switzerland and the other European Free Trade Association (EFTA) states - including Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway - as the first European partners to conclude an FTA with India.
Last November, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met with Switzerland's State Secretary for Economic Affairs Helene Budliger Artieda to discuss potential investment opportunities in the pharmaceutical sector.
“I co-chaired a meeting with SECO State Secretary Helene Budliger Artieda and representatives from Swiss pharma and biotech companies. We explored avenues for further cooperation in research and development (R&D) and investment opportunities for Swiss pharmaceutical companies looking to leverage India's robust healthcare sector,” Goyal noted in a post on X following the meeting.
“Additionally, we reviewed the progress made under the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with the goal of enhancing collaboration across key sectors for mutual growth,” he added.
