New Delhi, Feb 3 (NationPress) The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources from Bhutan, Lyonpo Gem Tshering, engaged in discussions with Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal during a meeting on Tuesday aimed at enhancing the long-standing collaboration between India and Bhutan in the power sector.
During their dialogue, both representatives explored the commercial optimization of power generation from the Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project (1020 MW). The early commissioning of the Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project (1200 MW) was also a major focus, as per an official announcement following the meeting.
Additionally, the agenda included discussions on the progress of the Sankosh Hydropower Project. India and Bhutan also talked about planning the transmission infrastructure up to the year 2040, with thorough consultations currently ongoing. The need to expedite the approval process for power scheduling, especially during Bhutan's lean months, was highlighted in the statement.
The Ministers expressed their appreciation for the enduring friendship between the two nations and looked forward to deepening it further. Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Naik, along with senior officials from the power ministry, were also present.
In November 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, built under a bilateral agreement, representing a significant milestone in the energy partnership between India and Bhutan. The two nations also reached a consensus on resuming work on the main dam structure of the 1200 MW Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project.
India has provided a Rs 4,000 crore Line of Credit (LoC) to Bhutan to promote economic growth in the Himalayan nation.
In another notable move to bolster cultural ties, PM Modi announced the allocation of land in Varanasi for constructing a Bhutanese temple and guest house in the sacred city.
Moreover, both countries have decided to set up an Immigration Check Post in Hatisar, adjacent to Gelephu.
During PM Modi’s visit, several Memoranda of Understandings (MoUs) were signed, including an MoU for cooperation in Renewable Energy signed by Lyonpo Gem Tshering and Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi, India’s Minister for New and Renewable Energy. This MoU aims to formalize bilateral cooperation in renewable energy sectors such as solar, wind, biomass, energy storage, green hydrogen, and capacity building.
