Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday, 30 September launched a sharp attack on the INDIA bloc opposition alliance, asserting that neither its constituent parties nor the Indian National Congress (Congress) itself is willing to accept Rahul Gandhi — the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition — as their leader. Chouhan's remarks came as the INDIA bloc held a meeting at Constitution Club in New Delhi to deliberate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Key Developments at the INDIA Bloc Meeting

The opposition gathering was convened to build a coordinated response on two primary issues: the SIR exercise for electoral rolls and the functioning of the ECI. The Congress Working Committee (CWC) had also passed a resolution demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, adding a sharper political edge to the agenda.

However, the meeting was notably marked by the absence of several key alliance partners. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) did not attend, Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party was reportedly occupied elsewhere, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had declined participation in advance, and Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (UBT) joined only virtually rather than in person.

Speaking to reporters, Chouhan said, 'The INDI alliance fell apart even before the meeting began. DMK is not attending the meeting. Akhilesh Yadav is busy somewhere else. AAP had already refused beforehand. Uddhav Thackeray will not join physically, but virtually. Why is this happening?'

He answered his own question directly: 'It is because the INDI alliance is simply not ready to accept Rahul Gandhi as their leader. They do not accept Rahul Gandhi's leadership, which is why they are not attending.'

Chouhan escalated the charge further, claiming that dissent over Gandhi's leadership extends within the Congress itself. 'Not just the INDIA bloc, but even the Congress leaders are not willing to accept Rahul Gandhi as their leader. Rahul Gandhi asks Congress leaders at the CWC meet to call him their leader. When Congress leaders themselves are not willing to accept Rahul Gandhi as their leader, how will the country accept him?' he said.

The Electoral Rolls Row

Separately, Chouhan defended the SIR exercise, which the opposition has flagged as a potential tool for voter disenfranchisement. 'A clean voter list is the soul of democracy. If wrong names are added to the voter list, then what is wrong with it? Why is there a problem in removing the names of people who are no longer alive or adding names of those who are not citizens? The voter list must be clean,' he argued.

The opposition's concern centres on whether the revision process could result in the deletion of legitimate voters from rolls — a charge the government and the ECI have not yet formally addressed in this context.

The INDIA bloc's internal fractures, laid bare by the patchy attendance at Wednesday's meeting, are not new. Alliance partners have repeatedly clashed over seat-sharing, strategy, and leadership since the bloc's formation ahead of the 2024 general elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has consistently sought to exploit these rifts, and Chouhan's remarks represent the ruling party's sharpest public framing of that narrative yet.
