India delivered more than 52 lakh domestic LPG cylinders in a single day on Wednesday, April 23, as the government confirmed that cooking gas distribution remains fully operational across the country with no dry-outs reported at any retail outlet. The milestone comes even as the global LPG supply chain faces pressure due to the volatile geopolitical situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Record Deliveries and Digital Booking Surge

Online LPG cylinder bookings have surged to 98 per cent of total transactions, signalling a sharp shift toward digital platforms. Authentication code-based deliveries — where a one-time password is sent to the consumer's registered mobile number — have climbed to approximately 94 per cent, a mechanism specifically designed to prevent diversion of subsidised cylinders to the black market.

The government's push toward digital verification is a direct response to years of reported LPG diversion, where subsidised cylinders meant for households were illegally rerouted to commercial users. The near-total adoption of OTP-based delivery marks a structural shift in how India manages its cooking fuel ecosystem.

Small Cylinders for Migrant Workers, PNG Expansion

More than 86,000 small 5 kg LPG cylinders — primarily used by migrant workers — were sold on Wednesday alone, bringing the cumulative total to 17 lakh units since April 1. Public sector oil companies have also organised over 8,200 awareness camps for migrant workers since April 3, underscoring the social equity dimension of the government's energy access push.

On the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) front, approximately 5.18 lakh new PNG connections have been gasified since March, with infrastructure readied for an additional 2.58 lakh connections — taking the total to 7.76 lakh connections. A further 5.87 lakh customers have registered for new connections. As of April 21, more than 41,000 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections through the MYPNGD.in portal, indicating growing confidence in piped gas infrastructure.

Commercial LPG Sales and Monthly Totals

On the commercial side, over 8,483 metric tonnes (MT) of commercial LPG — equivalent to more than 4.46 lakh 19 kg cylinders — was sold on Wednesday. The cumulative commercial LPG sales for April now stand at 1,40,362 MT, equivalent to more than 73.87 lakh 19 kg cylinders, reflecting robust demand from hotels, restaurants, and industrial users despite supply-side pressures.

Crackdown on Hoarding and Black Marketing

Enforcement operations against LPG hoarding and black marketing intensified on Wednesday, with more than 2,600 raids conducted nationwide resulting in the seizure of 285 cylinders. Cumulatively, authorities have now conducted over 1.5 lakh raids, seized more than 66,000 cylinders, registered over 1,100 FIRs, and arrested 255 persons across the country.

Public sector oil companies have imposed penalties on 298 LPG distributorships and suspended 70 distributorships following surprise inspections — a significant escalation in accountability measures that signals the government's intent to protect end consumers from exploitation during a period of supply sensitivity.

Government's Stance on Hormuz Situation and Refinery Operations

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed it is actively working to ensure uninterrupted availability of petroleum products and LPG across India in the context of the ongoing situation involving the Strait of Hormuz — a critical chokepoint through which a significant share of India's crude oil imports pass. All domestic refineries are operating at high capacity with adequate crude inventories, and local LPG production has been ramped up to cushion domestic consumption.

Citizens have been urged by the government to avoid panic purchases of petrol, diesel, and LPG, and to rely only on official sources for accurate information. LPG consumers are specifically requested to use digital booking platforms rather than visiting distributors in person.

As geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to evolve, India's ability to sustain record single-day LPG delivery volumes while simultaneously expanding PNG infrastructure and cracking down on black markets will be a critical test of its energy security architecture in the weeks ahead.
