Mumbai, Jan 15 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Wednesday that India has established itself as the First Responder in the Indian Ocean Region and is recognized as a trustworthy and responsible partner internationally, particularly within the Global South.

“Modern India is evolving into a formidable maritime force worldwide. Our approach is rooted in development rather than expansionism. A key focus for us is enhancing the military capabilities of 21st century India to be more advanced and competent,” he remarked after dedicating three frontline naval combatants, INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer, to the nation during their commissioning at the Naval Dockyard.

“The commissioning of these three frontline naval combatants illustrates India's steadfast commitment to nurturing a strong and self-reliant defense sector,” he emphasized.

The Prime Minister noted that this commissioning is a crucial advancement towards strengthening the Indian Navy for the 21st century, especially considering the influence of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on the Navy.

He reiterated that enhancing the nation's military capabilities to meet 21st-century demands is a major priority for India. “Whether on land, in the air, at sea, or in outer space, India is diligently protecting its interests across all domains. This is being achieved through ongoing reforms. The establishment of the Chief of Defence Staff was a significant milestone in this regard. Moreover, initiatives are underway to bolster our armed forces through the creation of Theatre Commands,” he explained.

He added that the government has commenced its third term with several significant decisions.

“We have rapidly formulated new policies, initiated projects that align with the nation's needs, and are committed to the development of every region and sector across the country,” he stated.

“For the first time, a destroyer, a frigate, and a submarine are being commissioned simultaneously. Most importantly, these frontline platforms are products of Made in India. Therefore, I extend my congratulations to the Indian Navy, engineers, workers, and the entire nation. January 15 is also recognized as Army Day. I pay tribute to every courageous soldier who dedicates their life to the nation’s defense. I commend every hero committed to safeguarding Mother India,” the Prime Minister remarked.

“India is rapidly moving towards becoming the world's third-largest economy. Such growth will necessitate a substantial demand for containers and ships. Consequently, the port-led development model will not only enhance economic growth but also generate significant job opportunities. The surge in employment within this sector is evident through the growing number of Indian seafarers,” he added.

Since 2014, the number of Indian seafarers has increased from fewer than 1.25 lakh to around three lakh. Today, India proudly ranks 5th globally in terms of the number of seafarers. Additionally, the construction of 60 ships worth over Rs 1.50 lakh crore is currently in progress.
