New Delhi, Sep 13 (NationPress) Aiming to foster discussion on emerging maritime challenges, India is set to welcome the 5th Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in Chennai in 2027, aligning with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), as stated by an official on Saturday.
This three-day event will provide a platform for India to reaffirm its leadership in international maritime cooperation and will feature an International Coast Guard Fleet Review along with a World Coast Guard Seminar.
The unanimous decision regarding India’s presidency of the 2027 Summit was made at the 4th CGGS, which took place in Rome, Italy, from September 11-12, 2025. This gathering was attended by delegates from 115 countries and international organizations, as per the official statement.
Director General (DG) of ICG, Paramesh Sivamani, highlighted that no single nation can tackle the entire range of maritime issues independently. He emphasized that the Chennai Summit in 2027 will create an inclusive forum that promotes interoperability, trust, and enhanced cooperation among Coast Guards globally.
During the meeting in Rome, DG ICG also met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and delivered a keynote speech titled 'Guardians Against the Blaze', showcasing ICG’s tactical expertise in fire emergency response.
At the ceremonial handover of the CGGS presidency, DG ICG described the Summit as a beacon of global Coast Guard collaboration aimed at addressing shared maritime challenges. He expressed gratitude to the Italian Coast Guard for its hospitality and acknowledged the Japan Coast Guard for its role as CGGS Secretariat.
In addition, DG ICG held discussions with the Commandant of the Italian Coast Guard. These dialogues, conducted under the framework of the Defence Cooperation Clause of the India–Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029, highlighted both nations’ commitment to advancing cooperation in Maritime Search and Rescue (M-SAR), marine pollution response, environmental protection, countering transnational maritime crimes, information exchange, maritime domain awareness, capacity building, training, and technical assistance.
