The ICG was established on February 1, 1977, to combat the smuggling of goods by sea that posed a threat to India's domestic economy, with the Indian Parliament declaring Indian Coast Guard Day on August 18, 1978.
Over the years, the ICG has evolved into a formidable maritime law enforcement and search and rescue agency of India, overseeing its territorial waters, including the contiguous zone and exclusive economic zones.
Initially equipped with just seven ships in 1977, the ICG has now transformed into a formidable force with 151 ships and 76 aircraft.
With the motto 'Vayam Rakshamah (We Protect)', the Coast Guard has consistently worked to ensure the safety and security of India's maritime regions.
The Coast Guard operates around the clock, deploying 55 to 60 surface vessels and 10 to 12 aircraft each day to monitor and safeguard India’s vast maritime territory.
