New Delhi, Sep 19 (NationPress) India has been re-elected to both the Council of Administration and the Postal Operations Council of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) during the 28th UPU Congress that took place in Dubai, as reported by the Ministry of Communications on Friday.
The Universal Postal Union is a specialized agency of the United Nations, serving as the principal platform for collaboration among postal sector stakeholders. The Council of Administration manages policy, regulatory and governance issues, while the Postal Operations Council acts as the technical and operational body that propels the modernization of postal services globally.
India’s re-election signifies the international community's trust in India Post’s leadership, reforms, and cutting-edge digital initiatives. Having been a member of the UPU since 1876, India has consistently played a pivotal role in fortifying the global postal network, according to the statement.
Throughout the last Congress cycle, India has led digital transformation initiatives such as DigiPIN (digital addressing), UPI-enabled cross-border remittances, and the facilitation of e-commerce through Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras; provided robust support for capacity-building and South-South cooperation under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme by offering specialized training for postal officials from Asia, Africa, and beyond; and made substantial contributions to the financial sustainability of the Union via membership dues and voluntary funding.
Building on these initiatives from the previous cycle, India is set to further deepen and broaden these efforts during the Dubai cycle, reaffirming its commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and global cooperation.
With this recent re-election, India will maintain a proactive stance in influencing the future of the global postal sector, driving innovation, inclusivity, and development. India has also indicated its intention to assume a leadership role within the Council of Administration in the upcoming cycle, the statement concluded.
In reaction to this achievement, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia remarked: "I am honored to announce that Bharat has been elected to both the Postal Operations Council and the Council of Administration at the 28th Universal Postal Congress in Dubai. This achievement underscores India’s expanding global leadership under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi."
"At the core of this success is the unwavering guidance of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, whose dedicated efforts were pivotal in achieving this milestone. Together, we strive to fuel innovation, boost financial inclusion, and advocate for sustainability in the postal sector," Scindia added.
"With the world’s largest postal network catering to 1.45 billion individuals, Bharat is uniquely positioned to aid the UPU’s mission of establishing a modern, inclusive, and resilient global postal system. My sincere thanks to all member nations for their confidence," he concluded.
