New Delhi, Sep 7 (NationPress) Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia is set to participate in the 28th Universal Postal Congress (UPC) in Dubai on Monday (September 8), as per an official announcement made on Sunday.
The Universal Postal Congress, held every four years, serves as the supreme decision-making platform of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which is a specialized agency of the United Nations and ranks as the second-oldest intergovernmental organization globally, founded in 1874. The UPU, based in Bern, Switzerland, establishes the framework for international mail exchanges and fosters collaboration in postal, parcel, and financial services among its 192 member countries.
This congress in Dubai marks a significant assembly where member nations will discuss the UPU’s new Strategy and Business Plan for 2026-2029, with an emphasis on digital transformation, resilience, and the modernization of postal services in a rapidly changing global economy. The Department of Posts, as one of the UPU's longest-standing and most active members, plays a crucial role in standardizing international postal regulations, enhancing cooperation, and advancing the modernization of global postal services.
During his time in Dubai, Scindia is also expected to engage in several bilateral discussions with member nations to bolster international cooperation and promote India’s postal and logistics interests on the world stage, the statement revealed.
In the meantime, India's postal network has evolved into the world's largest doorstep banking system, with the postman serving as a vital agent of financial inclusion.
Recently, Scindia emphasized that the India Post Office and India Post Payment Bank (IPPB) Online have transformed one of the globe’s oldest postal networks into the largest doorstep banking system worldwide.
The minister remarked that the Department of Posts, equipped with its network of 160,000 post offices, is crafting its growth narrative. The IPPB has emerged as a national trailblazer by ensuring the digitalization of all its rural accounts. Through technology integration, partnership expansion, and service diversification, the IPPB has redefined post offices into all-encompassing financial centers, demonstrating that even the most traditional institutions can adapt to a swiftly changing world.
Established eight years ago, the IPPB was designed to guarantee that no Indian citizen, regardless of location, gender, or situation, is excluded from the formal economy. By linking rural India to the digital economy, it has become a catalyst for national economic empowerment, he added.
