India sends 11-member rescue team, 68+ tonnes of aid to flood-hit Nepal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India dispatched its fifth relief aircraft to Nepal on 2 September, carrying an 11-member rescue team with specialised equipment and 5.5 tonnes of essential medicines, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced. The deployment brings India's total emergency relief to over 68 tonnes of materials as the Himalayan nation reels from catastrophic flash floods triggered by a glacial collapse in Tibet on 26 August.
Scale of India's Relief Operation
India's cumulative aid package includes blankets, sleeping bags, heavy-duty tarpaulins, plastic sheeting, hygiene kits, food packets, solar lamps, water purification tablets, and portable generators. The fifth aircraft's medical cargo supplements earlier deliveries of non-food relief items that have been arriving in Kathmandu since the disaster struck. This is among the largest bilateral relief operations India has mounted for Nepal in recent years.
Death Toll Crosses 1,000
Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) confirmed that the number of bodies recovered has reached 1,003. The southern Chitwan district recorded the highest fatalities at 321, followed by Nawalparasi East with 216. Nepal Police reported that 4,606 people remain unaccounted for, including 583 foreigners — a figure that suggests the final death toll could rise significantly.
Search Operations Along River Corridors
Nepali authorities are concentrating search efforts along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, where several hydropower projects sustained damage. At the request of the Nepali government, both India and China have deployed technical teams to assist in search and rescue operations inside hydropower tunnels — a rare instance of coordinated trilateral disaster response in the region.
Forensic Identification Underway
A 19-member Indian forensic team has begun analysing DNA samples in coordination with Nepali forensic experts to help identify victims. The identification effort is expected to be a prolonged process given the scale of fatalities and the number of bodies swept across multiple districts. As recovery operations continue, authorities are bracing for the toll to climb further in the coming days.
