New Delhi, Nov 28 (NationPress) In a strategic move aimed at fostering long-term domestic capability, the Indian government announced on Friday that it has entered into a Rs 7,995 crore agreement with the United States for sustainment support of the Indian Navy's MH-60R helicopter fleet. This pact, which includes Follow-on Support and Follow-on Supply Support, will be effective for a period of five years.
The Ministry of Defence revealed that Letters of Offer and Acceptance (LOAs) have been signed with the US government under the Foreign Military Sales program, with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh present for the occasion.
The sustainment support encompasses a comprehensive package that covers the provision of spares, support equipment, product support, training, technical aid, repair and replenishment of components, and establishing 'Intermediate' level component repair and Periodic Maintenance Inspection facilities within India.
By developing these facilities domestically, the government aims to ensure a long-term capability build-up and decrease dependence on the US, which aligns with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Furthermore, this initiative is expected to spur indigenous product and service development through micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and other Indian firms.
The Ministry of Defence emphasized that the sustainment support will significantly boost the operational readiness and maintenance of the advanced, all-weather MH-60R helicopters, which possess Anti-Submarine Warfare capabilities acquired via the US government.
This support will also facilitate the operation of these helicopters from various locations and ships, ensuring optimal performance during both primary and secondary missions.
The MH-60R helicopter introduces transformational anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) capabilities to navies globally. Known for its ruggedness, power, and reliability, operators can confidently conduct missions from both shore and ship and return safely.
This aircraft is equipped with advanced digital sensors, including multi-mode radar, electronic support measures, an electro-optical/infrared camera, data links, survivability systems, dipping sonar, and sonobuoys.
