New York, Sep 16 (NationPress) The discussions regarding trade between India and the United States resumed on Tuesday, as US Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch visited the Commerce Ministry, coinciding with improved relations between the two countries.
The Indian trade delegation is headed by Rajesh Agrawal, Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce.
As per sources from the Commerce Ministry, negotiations are taking place at various levels, and the subsequent course of action will be determined after discussions with Chief US Negotiator Lynch.
Both parties exhibit a positive outlook while tackling trade matters. The teams are poised to address all outstanding issues related to the trade agreement. Certain aspects are within the diplomatic sphere, where the MEA is also involved.
Lynch's visit arrives as optimism for a trade agreement has surged, propelled by encouraging remarks from US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following a period of intense deadlock.
In a post on Truth Social on September 9, Trump remarked that discussions were ongoing, stating, “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries.”
He referred to PM Modi as a “great friend,” indicating he would engage in conversation with him.
In response to Trump’s statement, PM Modi expressed his confidence that their trade negotiations would unlock the vast potential of the India-US partnership. He also indicated he was eager to converse with Trump.
Meanwhile, US nominee for ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, informed a Senate panel last week that India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is anticipated to visit Washington, DC, where he will meet with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
In another update, India’s merchandise trade deficit decreased to $26.49 billion in August, down from $27.35 billion in July.
Despite ongoing global uncertainties and trade policy challenges, Indian exporters have performed remarkably well, reflecting the effectiveness of government policies.
