New Delhi, June 17 (NationPress) As the situation between Iran and Israel intensifies, India is carefully managing a complex diplomatic relationship, striving to uphold strong connections with both nations while advocating for stability in the region.
In an interview with IANS, retired Indian Air Force (IAF) Officer and defence analyst Wing Commander Praful Bakshi (retired) stated, "India imports a substantial amount of oil from Iran and has historically maintained a friendly rapport with Tehran. The two countries have collaborated in various sectors over the years."
He added, "While Iran did not support India during the India-Pakistan conflict, as tensions rise in West Asia, Iran is looking for India's backing. At the same time, Israel—one of India's closest strategic and defence allies—is also seeking support from New Delhi."
On India's current diplomatic predicament amidst escalating tensions in the West Asian landscape, retired Wing Commander Bakshi remarked that India is currently walking a tightrope, aiming to uphold a balanced approach.
"If India can play a role in de-escalation, it would mark a significant diplomatic achievement for the country and contribute positively to regional peace," he emphasized.
Reflecting on the historical ties between Iran and Israel, retired Wing Commander Bakshi noted, "The two nations were allies during the Iran-Iraq War (1978–88), during which Israel reportedly supplied Iran with weapons, missiles, and necessary aircraft parts to counter Iraq."
"During this timeframe, Israel's intelligence agency Mossad developed a notable network within Iran. However, after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the overthrow of the Shah, their relationship soured," he pointed out.
Addressing the backdrop of the current conflict, which ignited when Hamas unleashed a wave of attacks against Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023, retired Wing Commander Bakshi explained, "The situation escalated post the Hamas assault on Israel, which involved horrific violence, including the rape and murder of Israeli civilians."
"Iran has shown support for Hamas, bolstering the regional anti-Israel coalition that includes Hezbollah, the Houthis, and even tacit support from China. On the other hand, the US along with nations like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt have either backed or remained neutral towards Israel," he noted.
In response, Israel has initiated targeted operations, eliminating key Iranian-associated leaders and striking suspected nuclear sites.
According to retired Wing Commander Bakshi, "While Iran's mobilization is extensive, Israel's operations are far more precise and focused."
