How are India and Germany Strengthening Their Friendship? PM Modi Meets Chancellor Merz at G7 Summit

Kananaskis (Canada), June 18 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the G7 Summit here.

Taking to the social media platform X, PM Modi expressed, "It was a pleasure to engage with Chancellor Friedrich Merz on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada. India and Germany share a profound friendship, united by common values. This year marks a significant milestone of 25 years in our Strategic Partnership. We explored ways to collaborate more closely in sectors such as IT, manufacturing, semiconductors, sustainability, research, and innovation."

In another post on X, he noted, "Chancellor Merz and I also deliberated on enhancing our defence and security ties. Our collaboration will continue in areas like counter-terrorism and combating terror financing."

This meeting was the first between the two leaders since Chancellor Merz took office in May 2025.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, "India-Germany... Celebrating 25 years of unwavering Strategic Partnership. PM @narendramodi engaged with Chancellor Friedrich Merz @_FriedrichMerz of Germany at the #G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. Both leaders discussed avenues to fortify India-Germany bilateral cooperation in key sectors such as trade & investment, defence & security, green & sustainable development, green energy, technology, innovation, education, and mobility. They also shared insights on regional and international developments."

PM Modi expressed gratitude to Chancellor Merz for Germany's robust solidarity and support in India's battle against terrorism.

He also congratulated Chancellor Merz on his recent electoral victory and his entry into office.

Moreover, PM Modi appreciated the German government's condolences regarding the recent tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad.

The leaders conveyed satisfaction over the ongoing momentum in their bilateral relations and reaffirmed their determination to bolster cooperation across vital areas such as trade, investment, defence, security, green energy, technology, innovation, education, and mobility.

Both parties reached an agreement to deepen and diversify the India-Germany Strategic Partnership as they commemorate its 25-year milestone.

They acknowledged that terrorism poses a significant threat to global peace and stability, and PM Modi thanked Chancellor Merz for Germany's strong show of solidarity and support for India's counter-terrorism endeavors.

Additionally, the leaders exchanged perspectives on critical regional and international matters.
