Uttarkashi, Aug 5 (NationPress) - The Indian Army has arrived in the Dharali area near Harsil in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district to initiate rescue efforts after a catastrophic cloudburst obliterated an entire village.
Numerous villagers are reported missing following the abrupt rise in water levels in Kheer Gadh.
"A significant mudslide hit Dharali village in the Kheer Gadh region near Harsil, causing a sudden rush of debris and water through the community," stated the Surya Command of the Indian Army in a message on X.
Troops from the Ibex Brigade have been swiftly mobilized and are on-site to evaluate the situation and commence rescue operations. In addition to the Indian Army, personnel from the police, fire department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have also arrived at the location.
"We are determining the extent of the damage, and updates will be provided as relief operations progress," the Army mentioned. They added, "The Army remains steadfast in supporting our citizens during this natural disaster."
Following the rapid increase in water levels, especially in Kheer Gadh near Dharali, extensive damage has been reported in the local market area.
Officials have advised residents to maintain a safe distance from riverbanks and prioritize the safety of children and livestock.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep concern regarding the disaster and assured that relief operations are being conducted with utmost urgency.
"The reports of severe damage from a cloudburst in the Dharali (Uttarkashi) area are profoundly saddening. SDRF, NDRF, district administration, and other related teams are actively engaged in relief and rescue efforts on a war footing," CM Dhami stated in a post on X.
"I am in continuous contact with senior officials, and we are closely monitoring the situation. I pray for everyone's safety," he added.
While official confirmation regarding casualties is still pending, the search for the missing continues.
