Uttarkashi, Aug 5 (NationPress) A catastrophic cloudburst impacted the Dharali region close to Harsil in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district on Tuesday, resulting in the destruction of a village and the reported disappearance of numerous residents.
With an unexpected rise in water levels, particularly in Kheer Gadh near Dharali, significant destruction was observed in the local market area, leading to an immediate mobilization of the police, fire department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Indian Army.
"As a consequence of the increasing water levels in Kheer Gadh in Dharali, Uttarkashi, we have received reports of damage in the Dharali market area. The police, fire department, SDRF, and army, along with other disaster relief and rescue teams, are currently engaged in relief and rescue operations at the site," stated Uttarakhand Police in a public advisory.
Officials have advised residents to keep a safe distance from riverbanks to safeguard children and livestock.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed profound concern regarding the disaster, assuring that relief efforts are underway at an urgent pace.
"The news regarding the severe damage caused by a cloudburst in the Dharali area of Uttarkashi is incredibly distressing. SDRF, NDRF, district administration, and other relevant teams are working tirelessly in relief and rescue operations," CM Dhami remarked in a post on X.
"I am maintaining constant communication with senior officials, and the situation is being closely monitored. I pray for the safety of all involved," he added.
While official confirmation of casualties is still pending, the search for the missing individuals continues.
Just a day prior to the cloudburst, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a caution for "extremely heavy rainfall" in various regions of Uttarakhand, including Uttarkashi, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri, and Chamoli, starting from August 4.
In light of the alert, the Dehradun district administration ordered the closure of all schools up to Class 12 and Anganwadi centers on August 4.
CM Dhami convened a virtual meeting with District Magistrates across all 13 districts to assess the state's readiness and review ongoing development initiatives amid the warnings issued by the IMD.
