Dehradun, Aug 7 (NationPress) Just two days after devastating flash floods were unleashed by cloudbursts in the Uttarkashi region of Uttarakhand, extensive relief operations are underway. Individuals are being airlifted to safer elevations, while those who have suffered injuries are receiving prompt medical attention.
As of this morning, over 50 people have been successfully airlifted from the flood-affected area of Dharali to the elevated region of Matli via helicopters. From Matli, they are being transferred to their respective destinations.
The authorities have published the names and contact details of 55 stranded individuals who were evacuated on Thursday, just two days after the floods devastated villages in Dharali. More rescues are expected throughout the day.
Rescue operations are being led by teams from the Indian Army, ITBP, NDRF, and SDRF, working closely with the local police and administration.
Additionally, the Indian Army has ramped up its relief efforts in the cloudburst-impacted zone of Dharali, near Harsil. More than 225 troops, including specialized engineers and medical teams, are actively engaged in rescue and relief operations. Drones have been deployed for aerial surveys and to locate stranded individuals in hard-to-reach areas.
In light of multiple road closures reported in areas including Bartwari, Linchigad, Gangrani, and near Dharali, Chinook and Mi-17 helicopters have been stationed in Dehradun for airlift operations, with an emergency aviation base being set up at the Matli Helipad.
Search-and-rescue dogs, Recco radar teams, and five civilian helicopters are now part of the ongoing efforts to bolster relief and rescue operations.
“Lt Gen Sengupta, Army Commander Central Command, and GOC UB Area, are present at Dharali and are ensuring seamless coordination with HQ Central Air Command. Every possible effort is being made to guarantee the safe evacuation and care of all affected. The Indian Army stands resolutely with the people of Uttarakhand during this critical time,” a statement released this morning read.
Meanwhile, the Met Department has issued a Red Alert for several regions in the mountainous state, including Pauri Garhwal, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar, Bageshwar, and Nainital, effective until August 12.
As a precautionary measure, schools and educational institutions have been closed, and residents are urged to remain indoors.
