New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) The Indian Railways has reached an important milestone in FY25 by producing 7,134 coaches, marking a 9 percent increase from 6,541 coaches manufactured in the previous fiscal year (FY24).

Last fiscal year, a special focus was placed on non-AC coaches, with a total of 4,601 coaches produced to meet the needs of the general public.

The Ministry of Railways stated that the annual average production of coaches has increased from 3,300 in the period 2004-14 to 5,481 in the decade 2014-24, resulting in a total production of 54,809 coaches in the last ten years.

This growth signifies India’s commitment to modernizing its railway infrastructure to accommodate the rising demand from passengers.

The Indian Railways operates three coach manufacturing facilities across the country: the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, Punjab, and the Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh.

The ICF, India's leading passenger coach manufacturing unit located in Chennai, exceeded its previous production records for the year 2024-25 by rolling out 3,007 coaches, as reported by the ministry.

Coach production in India has grown significantly over the years. From 2004 to 2014, Indian Railways produced fewer than 3,300 coaches on average each year.

“However, from 2014 to 2024, production experienced a remarkable surge with 54,809 coaches produced, averaging 5,481 coaches annually, in line with the push for improved connectivity and self-sufficiency in railway manufacturing,” the ministry noted.

This expansion is part of a larger initiative to boost domestic production capabilities, lessen reliance on imports, and incorporate advanced technology into railway designs.

The record-setting coach production aligns with the government’s vision of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’, ensuring enhanced public transport services while promoting domestic manufacturing.

With the introduction of more coaches, passengers can expect improved facilities, enhanced safety features, and increased capacity to meet growing demand, according to government sources.

This accomplishment also reinforces the ‘Make in India’ initiative, establishing India as a significant player in the railway manufacturing sector.
