New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) Indian Railways has achieved a historic milestone by producing 41,929 wagons in FY25, exceeding the 37,650 wagons constructed in the previous fiscal year (FY24), as reported by the government on Friday.
This achievement signifies a dramatic increase from the average annual production of 13,262 wagons recorded between 2004 and 2014, demonstrating a substantial enhancement in manufacturing capability and operational efficiency, stated the Ministry of Railways.
Over the last three years, the total wagon production has reached 1,02,369 units, significantly boosting the Railways' freight capacity.
This escalation is anticipated to alleviate freight bottlenecks and improve the movement of rail cargo.
“The figures indicate a substantial rise in annual wagon production, reflecting the government’s commitment to not only enhancing domestic manufacturing but also optimizing freight movement, which will facilitate convenience and substantially benefit the Indian economy, driving India towards its aspirations of becoming an economic powerhouse,” remarked the ministry.
This increase in wagon production is expected to greatly influence both the economy and the environment.
With a greater number of wagons available, transportation delays will be notably reduced, ensuring quicker cargo movements and heightened efficiency for industries that rely on bulk transport, such as coal, cement, and steel.
By decreasing reliance on road freight, this transition will also diminish fuel consumption and emissions, aiding sustainability goals. Furthermore, the enhanced efficiency in freight movement will assist in lowering transportation costs, ultimately benefiting both businesses and consumers by alleviating inflationary pressures, as per government sources.
In addition, Indian Railways accomplished a significant feat in FY25 by producing 7,134 coaches, marking a 9 percent increase from 6,541 coaches in the prior fiscal year (FY24). The previous fiscal saw a particular focus on non-AC coaches, with 4,601 coaches produced.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the annual average coach production has escalated from 3,300 in the 2004-2014 period to 5,481 in the 2014-2024 span, totaling 54,809 coaches produced over the last decade.
As Indian Railways continues to enhance its freight capacity, it is playing an essential role in bolstering India’s industrial infrastructure and economic resilience.
