New Delhi, June 4 (NationPress) India has reiterated its dedication to global disaster resilience initiatives at the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva. Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Dr. P K Mishra, engaged in constructive discussions with Norway's Deputy Minister for International Development, Stine Renate Håheim, stressing the significance of international collaboration in reducing disaster risks.
During the opening ceremony of the platform, Dr. Mishra showcased India's proactive stance on disaster preparedness and resilience-building, further affirming India's commitment to fortifying partnerships for a safer, more resilient future.
To enhance efforts in disaster resilience, India established the NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority), NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), and SDMAs (State Disaster Management Authorities) to ensure effective disaster response, as mandated by the Disaster Management Act of 2005.
The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, under the auspices of the United Nations, serves as the premier global forum to evaluate and discuss advancements in the implementation of disaster risk reduction strategies.
The eighth session of the Global Platform (GP2025), organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), is currently taking place in Geneva, Switzerland.
This event aims to assess and deliberate on the progress made in executing the recommendations articulated in the Political Declaration adopted by the UN General Assembly in May 2023, while providing actionable guidance to expedite further implementation.
GP2025 presents an opportunity for all involved parties to urgently recommit to accelerating progress in disaster risk reduction, paving the way for sustainable development.
The agenda for GP2025 will be directed by the Sendai Framework, particularly its goals, four action priorities, and seven global targets, alongside key priorities highlighted in the midterm review of the Sendai Framework, the GP2022 Co-Chairs' Summary, and upcoming Regional Platform meetings in 2024.
The next Global Platform will serve as a crucial milestone between the High-Level meeting on the midterm review of the Sendai Framework (May 2023) and the five concluding years before the Sendai Framework reaches its conclusion.
