Addis Ababa, Dec 16 (NationPress) As India continues to solidify its status as a global economic and political force under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian community in Ethiopia views his forthcoming visit as a pivotal moment for enhancing bilateral relations.
This marks the first time in many years that an Indian Prime Minister will set foot in Ethiopia, and the Indian diaspora is optimistic that this visit will usher in a new era of trade, investment, and strategic partnerships between the two nations.
Indian businessman Mayur Kothari, Founder and CEO of the Mohan Group of Companies, remarked on the significance of this visit, highlighting the deep-rooted civilizational connection between India and Ethiopia.
“The business relationship has been growing consistently over the years, and I believe that the Prime Minister’s visit will yield fruitful results in terms of trade and investment,” Kothari stated.
He emphasized that both nations are key representatives of the Global South and are partners in organizations like BRICS, making enhanced economic collaboration a natural progression.
“Indian investments are already pivotal to Ethiopia’s economy,” he added.
“India ranks among the top sources of foreign direct investment in Ethiopia, with approximately 170 to 180 Indian companies active in sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and infrastructure,” Kothari elaborated.
“Numerous businesses have excelled and have even received accolades from the Ethiopian Prime Minister for their contributions as responsible taxpayers, which is a moment of pride for the Indian business community,” he noted.
Other members of the Indian diaspora shared similar sentiments. Rajeev Sharma, Co-Convenor of the Indian Business Forum, pointed out the similarities between India and Ethiopia, particularly in demographics, with a large and youthful population. This, he argued, lays a strong foundation for long-term collaboration and mutual growth.
Amit Kumar Sinha, CEO of Silafrica Ethiopia Industries PLC, highlighted the importance of quality investments and effective management.
“Industries that are well-managed not only achieve commercial success but also create significant employment opportunities, benefiting the wider economy,” Sinha remarked.
For smaller entrepreneurs, the Prime Minister’s visit holds both emotional and economic importance.
Sunil Shrivastava, owner of Radha’s Indian Restaurant in Addis Ababa, expressed pride and excitement within the Indian community.
Having operated in Ethiopia for over 15 years, he conveyed that the diaspora hopes this visit will further improve business conditions and strengthen interpersonal connections.
